Skin packaging uses vacuum technology applied to thermo-sealing machines.
The upper film forms tightly around the product and tray, creating a second-skin effect. This vacuum process helps extend product shelf life while maintaining presentation quality.
Optional easy-peel materials can be used to improve pack opening for the end user.
Skin packaging is suitable for:

By extending shelf life, skin packaging increases the commercial lifespan of food products.

In skin packaging conditions, meat products can continue a natural maturation process, supporting improved tenderness, texture and flavour development.
Once opened, the product is immediately exposed to oxygen and will regain its natural colour within a few minutes without affecting taste or freshness.
There are three skin packaging formats available:
Non-Protrusion:
- Product height does not exceed tray depth
- Optimal tray depth: approximately 25–30mm
- Designed for maximum skin contact and finish
Protrusion:
- Product exceeds tray depth
- Recommended tray depth must not exceed 20mm
- Product can protrude above tray lip:
- Up to 30mm (standard)
- Up to 50mm (optional)
Protrusion onto Flat Board:
- Uses a flat support surface instead of a traditional tray
- Product can protrude:
- Up to 30mm (standard)
- Up to 50mm (optional)
- Enables use of cardboard or flat bases, reducing plastic usage
- Allows multiple print and branding options for customised packaging

Vacuum & Gas MAP involves removing air from the tray using vacuum technology, followed by the injection of a controlled gas mixture before sealing the tray.
The Italian Pack Olympus tray sealing machine is a semi-automatic system designed for multiple packaging formats including seal only, partial vacuum, skin packaging, gas flush and MAP.
The system features a rotating turntable that reduces downtime by enabling simultaneous loading and unloading on one side while sealing takes place on the opposite side.
An optional automatic tray lifter can be added to increase throughput.
The same die/mould system can be configured for seal only, MAP and skin packaging applications.
