Skin packaging applies vacuum technology to thermo-sealing machines.
The upper film encloses both the product and tray, forming tightly around it like a second skin. This vacuum process helps extend product shelf life.
Optional easy-peel materials can be used to improve opening convenience for the end user.
Skin packaging is suitable for:
- Attractive product presentation
- Complete sealing
- Reduced product damage
- High safety standards
- Improved hygiene and preservation
By extending shelf life, skin packaging increases the commercial lifespan of food products.
Product visibility is improved, allowing vertical display. This helps reduce waste and returns by improving shelf replenishment and stock rotation processes.
When packed in skin conditions, meat and meat products can continue a natural maturation process, supporting improved tenderness, texture and flavour.
Once opened, the product is exposed to oxygen and regains its natural bright colour within a few minutes without affecting taste and freshness.
There are three skin packaging formats available:
Non-Protrusion:
- Product height does not exceed tray depth
- Recommended tray height: 25–30mm
- Designed for optimum skin performance
Protrusion:
- Product exceeds tray depth
- Recommended tray depth must not exceed 20mm
- Product can protrude above tray lip:
- Up to 30mm (standard)
- Up to 50mm (optional)
Protrusion onto Flat Board:
- Uses a flat support instead of a traditional tray
- Product can protrude:
- Up to 30mm (standard)
- Up to 50mm (optional)
- Reduces plastic usage by enabling cardboard or flat packaging surfaces
- Allows multiple print and custom packaging options
The Perseus MAP Skin packer can also operate in MAP mode by fitting an additional base plate for the tray die/mould. For more information, please contact our sales team on 01233 733737
Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) involves introducing a controlled food-grade gas mixture into the tray to extend shelf life and maintain product quality, freshness and appearance.
MAP packaging provides:
- Tamper-evident packaging
- Reduced spoilage, waste and returns
- Improved product stability throughout shelf life
Advanced gas mixtures help maintain natural colour, taste and freshness.
Extended shelf life supports:
- Reduced delivery frequency
- Improved distribution efficiency
- Increased turnover during promotions and peak demand periods
Vacuum & Gas MAP is a process that removes air from the tray using vacuum technology, followed by the injection of a controlled gas mixture before sealing.
The Italian Pack Perseus Skin Packer is a fully automated system designed to meet a wide range of packaging requirements, with models available for seal only, partial vacuum, skin packaging, gas flush and MAP applications.
The Perseus range is designed for high-quality, high-speed and high-safety performance, typically associated with larger footprint systems.
Continuous development has enabled Italian Pack to combine advanced engineering with compact, reliable and user-friendly operation.
The Perseus range can be customised and integrated into complete packaging lines to meet full production requirements.
Turnkey system solutions can include:
- Infeed and outfeed conveyors
- Tray aligners
